Trends Indicate There are More NPs Nationwide
This article published by the Fremont-Tribune highlights a new trend among nurse practitioners – registered nurses who have completed advanced education (either a master's or doctorate degree) and have national board certifications in a specialty such as family, pediatrics or geriatrics. According to the article, in the past five years, the U.S. has seen a 75 percent increase in the number of nurse practitioners, per data from the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. Nationally, 9,203 nurse practitioners were graduated in 2009-10, up from 7,197 in 2006-07. The reasons may vary, but the article speculates that one reason could involve a heightened awareness of nurse practitioners by the public and nurses themselves. The article illustrates the decisions involved in becoming a NP through a first-hand anecdote.
